Valentine's Day
One of the most popular celebrations around the world is Valentine's Day. When we talk about the day of lovers, we have the perception that it is a commercial invention of the department stores to increase their sales. While it is true that this was the cause of the generalization of this celebration and its importation in many countries in the middle of the twentieth century, this tradition comes from many centuries ago and has its origin in ancient Rome.

1. Origin of Valentine's Day

The origin of Valentine 's Day is full of legends that intermingle with historical data.

In Ancient Greece , between mid-January and mid-February the month of Gamelion that was dedicated to Zeus and Hera marriage was celebrated.

In Rome on February 15 Lupercalia, which was the feast of fertility were held. People who could not have children considered it a curse and underwent certain religious rites to heal themselves. Animals were sacrificed and with pieces of their skin, the priests whipped the people who came en masse, because they thought that in this way they would end their sterility.

But it was a Christian bishop who gave his name to the day of love and Christian tradition which bases its origin.

According to the legend, by the year 270 AD the Roman Empire was in decline and military campaigns were increasingly disastrous. Emperor Claudius III thought that married men were psychologically and emotionally more vulnerable than single men when they had to fight, they had more to lose and less risk.

Therefore, he forbade marriage. The news, as it supposes, had a strong popular opposition. Bishop Valentine began to secretly marry couples who came to him. When they discovered it, it was condemned to die, being executed the 14 of February of year 270 d. C.

It was the Church decreed to Valentine as the patron of lovers and February 14 its conclusion . One of the reasons for this was to end the ancient pagan festival of Las Lupercales, but the most important reason was the great acceptance and popular devotion that this saint had.

2. Valentine's Day around the world

Nowadays practically all the western countries celebrate the day of Valentine, the Anglo-Saxon countries are the ones that have more tradition in this sense.

Some historians observe that already in the Middle Ages in England it was customary to send verses of love that day, indicating that this may be the origin of "valentines" or greeting cards that lovers are sent, a tradition that has survived to this days.

In the late nineteenth century they appeared the first commercial valentines, cards with illustrations and with a space to write a message. In North America children exchange greeting cards with their friends and young people organize dances and parties. In some places in Italy they celebrate a banquet this day and in Mexico the lovers give themselves roses.

Valentine's Day is a genuinely Western celebration, although globalization has made it to be exported to other cultures, and in this way has reached countries like China or Japan.

It is said that it was the chocolate company Morozoff that introduced this custom for reasons more than evident.

In Spain , the Valentine did not have much tradition, but commercial interests have made their celebration is imported and this is increasingly accepted, especially among young people. It has become customary to give a gift to the couple on this day and department stores use it as a claim to increase their sales just as they do with Father's Day or Mother's Day.
