Justine DeCoste's Berlin/World Vision Fundraising

by Justine DeCoste for World Vision Deutschland e.V.

The Berlin Marathon, September 24th 2017, will be my fifth marathon, and my first international race.  It is something that I have been looking to accomplish for a number of years now, and I could not be more excited to participate alongside 40,000 runners in one of the world's largest and most renowned marathons, while raising money and awareness for Team World Vision.   World Vision operates the largest privately funded rural water, sanitation and hygiene program in the world.

We all need clean, fresh water to drink. We all need sanitary conditions so that human waste is safely disposed. Yet, water and sanitation facilities are often scarce or unreliable in many communities around the world.  About 628 million people in the world lack access to safe drinking water and are forced to walk five to ten miles a day to gather water that isn't even safe to drink.

This has a dire impact on the health of children and families. Poor water and sanitation is the leading cause of diarrhea, which is the second biggest cause of death among children under five, killing 760,000 each year.

As well as directly causing death, poor water and sanitation can severely erode health and wellbeing gains made by food and nutrition programs.  80% of childhood diseases are related in some way to unsafe drinking water, inadequate hygiene and poor sanitation.  Illness and time spent collecting water also reduces school attendance and adults' capacity to work and earn income.  It is estimated that if the last 10% of the world had access to clean water, girls worldwide would miss school 50% less often, and women and children around the globe would save 200 million hours from not hauling water every day.

With your support, World Vision can provide equitable access to the necessary “hardware”, including wells, boreholes, water tanks, toilets, taps and sewage infrastructure.  To better enable long-term success, your support also helps to build the equally important “software”, promoting better hygiene and empowering communities with the knowledge and motivation to advocate for, build and maintain facilities and infrastructure.

I would greatly appreciate if you could help me in my fundraising efforts by making a donation to World Vision Deutschland e.V. or bringing awareness around my fundraising efforts.  Team World Vision does not pay for team member's race entry fees, jerseys or transportation, 100% of the proceeds go to the cause!  There are no small donations, everything counts!!

Thanks so much for your help!
