Im Jahr 2021 nahm unsere Familie von einem Tag auf den anderen eine Wendung, als unsere vierjährige Tochter mit der Diagnose eines seltenen Lymphoms konfrontiert wurde, das in Frankreich jedes Jahr nur etwa ein Dutzend Kinder zwischen 0 und 21 Jahren betrifft. Nach fast einem Jahr Chemotherapie befindet sie sich jetzt in Remission und wird noch drei weitere Jahre überwacht.

Eine Immuntherapiebehandlung hätte für ihr Lymphom möglicherweise in Erwägung gezogen werden können, jedoch nur für Erwachsene. Imagine for Margo finanziert derzeit eine Studie, um Kindern mit derselben Diagnose die Möglichkeit einer weniger aggressiven Immuntherapie im Falle eines Rückfalls zu bieten. Viele pädiatrische Lymphome haben nicht einmal andere Behandlungsoptionen im Falle eines ergebnislosen ersten Chemotherapieversuchs.  Viele pädiatrische Krebserkrankungen (zum Beispiel bestimmte Hirntumoren)  haben nicht einmal Heilungsmöglichkeiten, selbst wenn diese bei Erwachsenen existieren, da sie nicht an Kinder angepasst wurden.

Krebs verändert auch das logistische, berufliche und finanzielle Leben einer Familie, einschließlich solcher, bei denen die Eltern krank sind und der Alltag ihrer Kinder über unsere kollektive Vorstellungskraft hinaus beeinflusst wird. Wir haben seit unserer Ankunft am Internationalen Gymnasium persönlich mehrere solcher Familien getroffen. Diese Familien sind selten im Blickfeld anderer, denn Krebs isoliert und erstickt ihren Alltag.

Um gegen diese Ungerechtigkeiten vorzugehen und sie zu bekämpfen, ist es wichtig, zusammenzuhalten und gemeinschaftliche Initiativen zu ergreifen, unabhängig davon, ob man persönlich betroffen ist oder nicht. Dies ist ein integraler Bestandteil der menschlichen Bildung in unseren Leben, angefangen bei der Schule, unabhängig von Alter und Herkunft...

En 2021 notre famille a pris un tournant du jour au lendemain avec le diagnostique de notre fille à 4 ans (lymphome rare impactant seulement une douzaine d'enfants entre 0 et 21 ans en France chaque année).  Après presque un an de chimiothérapie celle-ci est en rémission, encore suivi sur les 3 ans à venir. 

Un traitement immunothérapie aurait pu être possible pour son lymphome, mais seulement chez l'adulte.  Imagine for Margo finance justement une étude actuellement pour permettre aux enfants avec ce même diagnostique de bénéficier d'immunothérapie moins aggressive en cas de rechute.  De nombreux lymphomes pédiatriques ne bénéficient même pas d'autres possibilités de traitement en cas de rechute si une première chimiothérapie ne fonctionne pas.  De nombreux cancers pédiatriques (ex: certaines tumeurs cérébrales) n'ont pas du tout de traitements avec guérison possible, même s'ils existent chez l'adulte, car ils n'ont pas été adaptés à l'enfant.

Le cancer chamboule également la vie logistique, professionelle et financière d'une famille, y compris celles avec des parents malades où le quotidien de leurs enfants est boulversé au-dela de notre imagination collective.  Nous avons personellement rencontré plusieurs de ces familles depuis notre arrivée au Lycée International.  Celles-ci sont rarement sur le radar des autres familles, car le cancer isole et étouffe le temps de leur quotidien.

Pour avancer et combattre ces injustices il est important de se serrer les coudes et prendre des initiatives d'entre-aide, qu'on soit impacté personellement ou non.  Cela fait partie intégrale de l'éducation humaine de nos vies, en commençant à l'école, quelque soient les âges et les pays...

In 2021 our family was radically impacted by our 4 year old daughter's diagnosis (rare lymphoma which only a dozen children between 0 and 21 years of age get in France each year). After almost a year of chemotherapy she is in remission, although still followed medically over the next 3 years.

Immunotherapy could have been possible for her lymphoma, but only in adults. Imagine for Margo is currently funding a study to allow children with the same diagnosis to benefit from less aggressive immunotherapy in the event of a relapse.   Many pediatric lymphomas do not even have other treatment options for relapse if initial chemotherapy does not work.  Many pediatric cancers (e.g. some brain tumors)  have no treatments for actually curing, even if they exist in adults, because these treatments are not yet adapted to childrens' needs.

Cancer also disrupts the logistical, professional and financial life of a family, including those with sick parents where the daily lives of their children are disrupted beyond our collective imagination. We have personally met several of these families since our arrival at the Lycée International. They are rarely on the radar of other families, because cancer isolates and robs them of their time on a daily basis.

To move forward and counter these injustices it is important to stick together and take initiatives to help each other, whether you are personally impacted or not. It is an integral part of the human education of our lives, starting at school, whatever the age and nationality may be...
