Jack Hartley — Médecins Sans Frontières

I am 28 years old, living with Type 1 diabetes, and I am running for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to turn a privilege I have been incredibly lucky to receive into an impact across the globe. Since my diagnosis in 2011, I have had access to world-class NHS care in the UK and technology that has transformed how I manage my condition. I use an insulin pump, CGM and hybrid closed-loop system that automatically adjusts my insulin. This has reduced the constant mental strain of managing blood sugars - something I liken to forever keeping a balloon in the air, with no day off. Most importantly, this access to healthcare has allowed me to live my life fully, including being strong and healthy enough to train for a marathon. But I know this is a privilege of where I was born, not something that should determine whether someone gets to live. I believe life saving healthcare should be a universal right, not a geographical privilege. For someone with Type 1 diabetes in a conflict zone, refugee camp or resource-limited setting, access to insulin can be the difference between life and death. Millions worldwide still struggle to access or afford insulin, which deeply saddens me considering my own experience. That is why I would be proud to run for MSF. I want to turn the opportunity my access to healthcare has given me into awareness, funds and impact for people who have been denied that same opportunity. Every mile of this marathon will represent something bigger than the run itself. I would greatly appreciate if you could help me in my fundraising efforts by making a donation to Médecins Sans Frontières or bringing awareness around my fundraising efforts. There are no small donations. Donations are processed through Alvarum. It is very easy and 100% secure. Thank you for your help! Jack Hartley
