On Sunday 1 October my wonderful friend Carol and I joined the annual Odyssea march against breast cancer, walking 5km in support of BC awareness and research.
I have been doing this event with friends since 2009, marching on behalf of the many wonderful women we love whose lives have been touched by this killer disease. Some years there have been 8, 10 or even 13 marchers in our Gang, some years just 2 or 3, but every year it is an amazing and inspiring experience.
It was a treat to march this time around with Carol, who is in Paris this week to do research, visiting from her new home-away-from-home in Uppsala, Sweden. I am grateful that we were able to share this fun and meaningful event.
We and 37,998 other marchers braved the drizzle and the leaden skies to walk the very lovely course which goes around (and around, as in out into the bois de Vincennes) the Hippodrome de Vincennes racetrack.
Several live bands strategically placed along the route, colorful pink costumes and lots of enthusiasm from marchers young and old made it all a lot of fun despite the weather.
Once again I am so glad to have been able to do something concrete to symbolize my solidarity with women affected by BC.
Together over the yerars, with lots of help from our friends, our Gang has raised over 1500 euros in support of breast cancer research. And counting.
The march is always a time for me to remember and honor my amazing mother Phyllis Holowaty Albrecht, who passed away in 2015, and whose battle with BC back in 2009 was the reason I first began doing the Odyssea walk. Mom faced BC the way she faced life, with strength, energy, intelligence and unfailing humor. We miss her every day.
